Fun Things to Do in Georgetown, TX
Stroll through the prettiest town square around.
Often touted as the “most beautiful town square in Texas”, Georgetown’s central square certainly lives up to the hype: lined with Victorian-era buildings and dominated in the center by the impressive Williamson County Courthouse, you can enjoy many of the best things to do in Georgetown without straying far from this beautiful spot!
Tour the historic Williamson County Courthouse.
Built in 1909, the gorgeous Williamson County Courthouse is perhaps best known for being the site of what was considered the first prosecutorial success in Texas against members of the KKK in 1923.
Today, visitors can tour the courthouse through tours run by the Williamson Museum.
Go for a swim in Georgetown’s Blue Hole.
While Wimberley’s Blue Hole may be a bit better known in central Texas, Georgetown’s version definitely deserves a visit: located along the San Gabriel River, this beautiful swimming hole is just a 5-minute drive from the town square and is one of the best places to visit in Georgetown.
In addition to the swimming hole itself, there are also trails, picnic areas, and restrooms on-site.
Grab a glass of wine.
Several beloved Texas wineries, including Grape Creek, Barons Creek, and the city’s own Georgetown Winery, have tasting rooms right in the center of Georgetown. You don’t have to drive all the way out to the countryside to enjoy delicious Texas wine!
Shop the square (and beyond).
From antique shops to coffee shops to unique offerings like Ken’z Guitars and Mikey V’s Hot Sauce Shop (featuring an entire wall of hot sauce offerings), there is no shortage of interesting storefronts to explore in and around Georgetown Square!
Explore Georgetown’s hike and bike trails.
With more than 10 miles of trails throughout the city, you’re never far from a place to enjoy beautiful river views and natural beauty when visiting Georgetown!
Get underground at Inner Space Caverns.
In 1963, a core drilling team from the Texas Highway Department accidentally discovered the immense Inner Space Caverns when planning construction for I-35–and the interstate runs above the cavern to this day!
Open to the public since 1966, Inner Space Caverns are absolutely beautiful and are one of the coolest attractions in Georgetown.
See a show at the Georgetown Palace Theatre.
Located mere steps away from the city’s famous square, the historic Palace Theatre opened in 1926 and has been delighting patrons for almost a century–to this day, it is a celebrated performance venue in central Texas!
Admire the poppies.
While most of Texas is best known for bluebonnets, spring in Georgetown means that it’s poppy season!
Considered the Red Poppy Capital of Texas, Georgetown even throws a Red Poppy Festival each year.
The flowers typically bloom from mid-March to mid-April, making spring one of the best times to visit Georgetown.
Learn about local history at the Williamson Museum.
Housed in a historic bank building right on Georgetown Square, the Williamson Museum tells the story of Williamson County, and also offers tours of the Williamson County Courthouse.
Explore Lake Georgetown.
Surrounded by a 26.5-mile trail and home to a swimming beach, fishing opportunities, picnic areas, and beautiful sunsets, Lake Georgetown is one of the most popular Georgetown attractions for good reason!
Visit the Georgetown Art Center.
Featuring a rotating collection of art, the charming Georgetown Art Center is housed in a historic firehouse and is located just a short walk from the square.
Seek out public art.
From sculptures of poppies to colorful murals, there is no shortage of public art visible in and near Georgetown’s square!
Where is Georgetown?
Georgetown is located about 30 miles north of Austin and is very easy to reach via I-35–keep driving north once you pass Round Rock, and you’ll be there in no time!
